Hi everyone,
My name is Shelly-Ann. I’m 26 years old, I am from Colombia,my first language is Spanish. I started at LaGuardia in 2018, trying to pursue a nursing program. I had to pause my studies for personal reasons, but now I’m grateful to be back and excited to continue working toward my goals. I’m studying Accounting, and this is my 3rd semester in the program. I plan to transfer to Queens College or Baruch College. I am still working on my GPA to meet the requirements to transfer and earn my bachelor’s degree. My long-term goal is to become a CPA. Outside of school, I enjoy roller skating, volleyball, staying active, and spending time with my family. I also love meeting new people and learning from different cultures, which is one of the reasons I feel so comfortable at LaGuardia.
Writing is not one of my best skills. It takes me a lot of time to put my ideas in order, but I have improved since I had to take ENG 101 three times. Returning to college after a break has made me even more determined to stay organized, do well in my classes, and build the skills I’ll need for my career. I’m also a proud mom of five children—two biological and three stepchildren—who are my biggest motivation to succeed.
I look forward to learning and connecting with you all this short semester!

Hello Shelly Ann! Thanks for sharing your experience. It definitely is inspiring. It takes a lot of bravery to return to school after the break and stick to what you want to achieve. It is not easy to manage school, family and other ambitions such as becoming a CPA and I definitely see how committed you are to what you do. I also connect with what you mentioned regarding writing improvement and being organized, so it is heartening to see how much you have accomplished. All the very best to you this semester!
Hi Shelly. As someone who return to college, I can deeply relate to your situation. It is never too late to pursue the dream if you had not given up yet. Let’s do our best to become what we want to become.
Hello Shelly, it’s never too late to make our dreams come true. You have been resilient and continue working towards your goals. I hope you have a good semester.
Hi Shelly, thank you for sharing your journey! I really admire your determination to come back to school and your goal of becoming a CPA. Like you, English is not my first language. I understand the challenge of putting ideas in order when writing and improving. Good luck this semester!
Hi Shelly! I admire how you didn’t give up and continued ENG101 a third time. I know it can be super hard especially when it’s not your first language. I am also Colombian, I grew up in the states but I’m trying to learn more about Colombia from my family and trying to be more fluent in Spanish. Sometimes I still need to think about what I’m going to say and then say it aloud.
