In this act, Shakespeare introduces the conflict between Prospero and Caliban, showing their differing viewpoints regarding who truly has the legitimate right to control the island. Prospero sees himself as a kind, civilized sort, who really helped Caliban out by offering him an education, especially by teaching him language. However, Caliban considers himself the rightful owner of the island. He thinks the land is his because he was born there and inherited it from his mother. Caliban therefore sees Prospero as a tyrant who has no right to govern the island. This confrontation shows that their real fight is primarily about the legitimacy of power. Prospero believes he has the right to rule because he helped Caliban and gained control through his knowledge and power. Caliban, though, sees himself as the island’s rightful owner and heir. In other words, Shakespeare shows their conflict as a fight over who is right and who is in charge.
