Blog Post #1

When I finished reading the ENG 102 information sheet, it was easy to spot my interactions in ENG 101 and to specify the differences that were important. The main concern in ENG 101 was to create strong paragraphs, to write thesis statements and to learn clear idea organization. The focus of ENG 102 is still on development and revision but at the same time it goes further by asking us to think critically about literary texts rather than minor everyday topics. The whole process of learning seems now to be more of an analysis, especially with close reading and interpretation being the primary skills.

One of the major differences is that we use literature poetry, fiction and drama as the base for our writing. Instead of simply stating ideas, we are supposed to investigate how language, voice and setting create meaning. The activity I’m looking forward to the most is the one responding to literature through blog posts and essays because it goes hand in hand with my reading habits. I am into discovering patterns, emotional changes and those moments that seem to be personal or relatable. Writing about New York City specifically strikes a chord with me as it gives me the chance to link my own experiences to the texts while putting together stronger analytical writing skills that will be a great help in the subsequent courses.
