The setting of “Sonny’s Blues” is important because it shows how life in Harlem affects the characters. Harlem is  a place with a lot of struggle, poverty, and limited opportunities. One part that stood out to me is when the narrator talks about his students and says their futures already seem limited. This shows how growing up in Harlem can make young people feel trapped. Another important moment is when the narrator describes the housing projects. Even though they are new, they still feel full of the same problems. The setting helps explain why Sonny feels stuck and looks for a way to escape through music.

The relationship between the narrator and Sonny changes over time. At first, the narrator does not understand Sonny and judges his choices, especially his love for music. He believes Sonny should live a safer and more stable life. One important moment is when Sonny writes to his brother from prison and explains how lost and alone he feels. This shows how much pain Sonny is hiding. At the end of the story, when the narrator watches Sonny play music, he finally understands him. He realizes that music helps Sonny survive.

One question I still have after reading the story is that Sony felt music was his only escape. I wonder if things would have been different for him if he had more support earlier in his life, or if he had grown up in a different place? This question is important to me because many people turn to no good choices when they feel alone or unheard. The story made me think how support can change someone’s path.
