What role does New York City play in shaping Sonny’s and the narrator’s choices? What role has where you live played in your own choices?
In “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin, New York City plays a powerful role in shaping both Sonny’s and the narrator’s lives. Harlem represents both confinement and possibility, a place filled with pain, struggle, and temptation, but also a space where art and expression can flourish. For Sonny, the city becomes both the source of his suffering and the stage for his redemption through music. The narrator tries to escape the hardships of Harlem by building a stable life, yet he is constantly drawn back to confront its realities and his connection to his brother.
For me, where I have lived has also shaped my choices in a big way. Living in Georgia for years, there were very few resources or opportunities to pursue my dream of becoming a dancer. That lack of access pushed me to move to New York City, where there was more room to grow creatively and professionally. Like Sonny, I felt that the city offered a chance to turn something difficult, the frustration of limited opportunity, into something meaningful and expressive.
