Shakespeare introduces the conflict between Prospero and Caliban over who owns the island. Both believe that they have every right to be the “owner”. Prospero thought he should be the owner because he sees himself as more sophisticated and civilized. He also educated Caliban and feels like he has that power over him. Caliban thinks he should be the owner because his mother lived there first. This early conflict allows us to see how eveyrhting was based on power. Although they think they are in the right, they are both backing themselves up woth no real opinions. This is about the struggle for power and legitamicy on the island.
